Dubai's Al Safa Street Gets Major Upgrade

Al Safa Street Expansion: Faster Commute and Better Access in the Heart of Dubai
Dubai is embarking on another major transportation development, focusing on the bustling Al Safa Street. The widening of this road not only aims to streamline urban traffic but also makes key hubs such as City Walk, Coca-Cola Arena, and the areas around Downtown Dubai and Financial Centre Street more accessible.
Faster Progress, Greater Capacity
The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced that the project would extend the Al Safa Street expansion over a 1,500-meter stretch between Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Wasl Road. The aim is to reduce the current average travel time from 12 minutes to 3 minutes.
Instead of the existing three lanes, there will be four lanes in each direction, increasing capacity from 6,000 vehicles to 12,000 vehicles per hour in both directions. In addition to the expansion, modern pedestrian walkways, bicycle lanes, community spaces, and green areas will be introduced to promote a more livable urban environment.
Two New Bridges and Two Tunnels Constructed
As part of the project, two bridges and two tunnels will be built, with a combined length exceeding 3,000 meters:
The first bridge directs traffic from Al Wasl Street towards Sheikh Zayed Road and Financial Centre Street. It has four lanes and a length of 1,005 meters, capable of handling 6,400 vehicles per hour.
The second bridge channels traffic from Al Satwa Road to the same destinations, with two lanes and a 360-meter length, accommodating 2,800 vehicles per hour.
The tunnels also play a crucial role:
The first tunnel serves traffic from Sheikh Zayed Road and Financial Centre Street towards Al Wasl Street, stretching 1,005 meters, with two lanes and a capacity of 3,200 vehicles per hour.
The second tunnel is being constructed at the intersection of Al Safa Street and Al Wasl Street, measuring 750 meters in length with two lanes in each direction, totaling a capacity of 6,400 vehicles per hour.
Significant Role in City Development
The Al Safa Street development is part of a comprehensive 15-kilometer infrastructure investment that spans Umm Suqeim, Al Safa, and Al Wasl streets as well. This integrated development renews six major intersections, including five new tunnels (a total of 3,850 meters), and expands the main routes to three lanes in both directions.
The aim is to increase transportation capacity from 8,000 to 12,000 vehicles per hour, while cutting travel time in half. Additionally, the development focuses on pedestrian and cyclist safety and convenience, with dedicated lanes, modern crossings, and vibrant community spaces.
Why is this redevelopment important?
This project is not only a breakthrough in terms of transportation but also contributes to the livability, economic dynamism, and sustainable urban development objectives of Dubai's districts. Better transportation supports tourism, business, and residents' daily convenience while promoting alternative means of transportation, such as cycling or walking.
Summary
The comprehensive expansion and modernization of Al Safa Street is a milestone in Dubai's transportation development. The new lanes, bridges, tunnels, and community spaces not only aim to make travel faster and safer but also breathe new life into the district. The project's full completion is anticipated to significantly ease traffic in the area while supporting a sustainable and smart urban lifestyle.
