Daily Traffic Woes Between Dubai and Sharjah

90 Percent Experience Daily Traffic Jam Between Dubai and Sharjah
The overwhelming majority of drivers traveling between Dubai and Sharjah, about 90 percent, face daily traffic congestion, according to a recent survey highlighting that one of the region's most severe traffic issues has become a part of the daily routine.
Population Growth and Traffic Go Hand in Hand
The population of the United Arab Emirates has grown dynamically in recent years. While in 2020 the total population was 9.45 million, by 2025 it exceeded 11.3 million. Dubai’s population is also nearing a historic high, approaching 4 million. This intense growth, especially in Dubai, has led to increased strain on the road network and traffic infrastructure.
Survey Findings
The study indicates that 90-91 percent of people traveling in Dubai and Sharjah cities experience daily congestion. Nationally, 86 percent of respondents reported that the traffic situation has worsened over the past year. The busiest times are in the afternoons, mornings at the start of the workday, and during school drop-off and pick-up times.
Causes of the Problem
According to respondents, the main causes of traffic congestion are:
Too many vehicles on the roads
Office and school days start at the same time
Transport primarily relies on private vehicles
Poor driving habits
Low passenger numbers in cars
Few telecommuting possibilities
Inadequate public transportation
Lack of alternative transportation infrastructure
School and work rush hours coincide, naturally intensifying traffic congestion, especially on the Dubai-Sharjah route, one of the busiest in the UAE.
Public Suggestions for Solutions
UAE residents participating in the survey suggested several possible solutions:
Expanding telecommuting options to reduce the number of people needing to be physically present at the office every day
Improving public transportation, introducing more metro and bus lines
Expanding the road network, particularly on key sections like the Dubai-Sharjah main road
Supporting alternative modes of transportation, such as bike lanes, electric scooters, and car-sharing
Psychological and Economic Effects
The daily recurrent traffic jams not only burden the transportation system but also have significant psychological impacts on those affected. Delays, stress, and loss of time can decrease productivity, especially for those who have to spend long hours in their cars due to work.
Summary
Residents of Dubai and Sharjah face challenges posed by traffic jams daily, with the situation worsening due to the continuous population growth and increasing number of vehicles. Although the problem is complex, the survey shows that the public is open to solutions: flexible working models, improved public transportation, and new road construction could all contribute to making transportation more livable in the UAE’s busiest regions.
