AI-Driven Platform Identifies Risky Drivers

Artificial Intelligence Ranks Risky Drivers – New Platform for Safer Roads
Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has developed a new platform based on artificial intelligence (AI) and big data technology designed to enhance traffic safety by primarily identifying and improving risky driving behavior. Currently in the testing phase, the system is called the Driver Risk Score and assesses individual drivers' risk levels based on past accidents, traffic fines, and black points.
How does the system work?
The solution aims to analyze driver behavior at an individual level. Drivers simply provide their Emirates ID and license number, and the system calculates their risk score based on three key factors: number and nature of road accidents, imposed fines, and black points acquired. Based on the score, each driver is classified into a low, medium, or high-risk category. The goal of the algorithm is to highlight risky drivers' behaviors and provide an opportunity for targeted training or awareness.
What purposes can the new system serve?
While currently under internal testing, insurers may eventually access the system to offer personalized pricing. The implementation of the system could reduce traffic violations and decrease the frequency of accidents.
Other potential applications include providing targeted education for younger drivers, launching risk management programs, and more effectively targeting traffic safety campaigns.
Why is such a platform needed?
Dubai's population has been rapidly growing, significantly increasing vehicle traffic. By 2024, 4.382 million vehicles were registered in the Salik system, compared to 4.013 million in 2023. Due to this increase in traffic, enhancing traffic culture, encouraging compliance, and preventing accidents have become priorities for authorities.
Future Possibilities
In the long term, the Driver Risk Score platform aims not only to improve traffic safety but also to encourage more responsible driving. The data collected through the system can be used in analyses, statistics, and urban transportation planning.
Traffic safety initiatives have always played a key role in the UAE's transport policy. The integration of technological solutions elevates authorities' ability to proactively manage risks to a new level.
Summary
The new Dubai platform is a forward-looking example of how data-driven solutions can be employed in the service of urban traffic safety. If the testing phase is successful, the broader implementation of the Driver Risk Score could offer significant benefits not just for authorities, but for insurers and the public as well. The system focuses on prevention and improvement rather than punishment – creating a much safer traffic environment on Dubai's roads.
