Abu Dhabi Sets Schoolbag Weight Limits for Private Schools
Abu Dhabi is introducing a new regulation regarding the weight of schoolbags for students in private schools, effective from February 1, 2026. The measure aims to protect the health and well-being of students by considering the increasing burden caused by overly heavy schoolbags. According to the new regulation, schools are required to adhere to specified weight limits, which will vary based on age groups to accommodate students’ age and physical attributes. With this, Abu Dhabi's educational authorities are addressing a significant issue that can affect children’s physical development and health in the long run.
The guidelines issued to private schools detail that the maximum weight of schoolbags should be proportional to the students’ body weight, reducing the risk of spinal and muscular problems. The regulation also mandates schools to support digital learning and ensure students do not carry unnecessary books and equipment.
From February 1, 2026, private schools will be required to implement these new guidelines, and strict inspections by educational authorities are to be expected. This measure is part of broader efforts aimed at improving the learning environment and well-being of students in Abu Dhabi.
The introduction of these new rules is a positive step towards ensuring children’s long-term health and represents significant progress in modernizing educational institutions.
