Abu Dhabi Bans Toxic Oleander for Public Safety

Abu Dhabi authorities have banned the cultivation of oleander plants to protect the public. This measure aims to ensure the safety of residents, especially children and animals, as every part of the plant is highly toxic if touched or ingested. Residents are urged to avoid direct contact with the plant.

Why is oleander dangerous?

Oleander is a widely planted ornamental plant that thrives in hot, dry climates, making it popular in the green spaces of the United Arab Emirates. Despite its striking appearance and vibrant flowers, every part of the plant – from the flowers to the leaves – is toxic. Oleander contains toxins like oleandrin, which can cause severe health complications, heart irregularities, or even death if ingested in small amounts. The toxins can also cause skin irritation or allergic reactions upon contact.

How does the measure impact the community?

The Environment Agency of Abu Dhabi announced that the ban on oleander cultivation takes immediate effect, with existing plants being gradually removed from public and private areas in the emirate. The primary goal is to protect families and pet owners, as children and animals may be particularly drawn to the plant out of curiosity, potentially leading to serious poisoning.

Authorities have warned residents not to touch the plant and to seek medical attention immediately if any accident or poisoning related to oleander occurs. Residents are also encouraged to recognize the plant and consult experts for its removal if found in private gardens.

Alternative plants for home gardens

Instead of oleander, authorities recommend various safer plants for home gardens and green spaces that provide similar beauty without posing a risk to families and pets. Native plants like the date palm, bougainvillea, and jasmine can be safer and more sustainable choices.

The Environment Agency of Abu Dhabi remains committed to preserving the well-being and safety of residents and continues its community outreach campaigns about potentially dangerous plants and their effects.

Important note: If you experience symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, dizziness, or skin irritation after contact with oleander, seek medical attention immediately.
